Geeks and Sports: Why Do Most Geeks Hate Them?

Something that always bugged me or just struck a chord with me, is the fact that sports seem to be hated among most geeks. It's such a consistent observation that even when a fellow geek is into sports, they are accused of not being a "true geek". I have seen certain celebrities who classify themselves as geeks (I won't name names) say how sports are not popular in their crowd.

The Return To Amy's Baking Company...

Or shall we say "Return to Planet Amy"? I think the last one fits much more. I mean after all anyone who has seen the highest rated Kitchen Nightmares episode that portrayed the Amy/Sammy duo, knows that those two can NOT be from Earth.

MC Chris and I Fight Dragons

When it comes to music, odds are genre preference will vary among geeks/nerds. For other societal cliques, their genre is usually consistent across the board (i.e., jazz and/or classical is listened to by higher class types, pop listeners usually include the younger generation; especially high school girls, hip-hop is favored by jocks, etc.). But for geeks we can listen to anything that fancies our ear. Although, we are probably the only ones that find the "aw"someness of video game music or songs based off movies favored by our community. I mean after all, who else would be able to understand the meaning behind those types of lyrics?

A Writer's Cop Out?

I am watching the Family Guy episode right now where Peter wins the golf game with OJ Simpson and realized how lazy the writer's can be on the show. The part I'm referring to is when they cut to Conway Twitty. They do this multiple times throughout the series and not once did I find it funny or useful. There was no point to it and it goes on for way too long to begin with let alone sometimes it seems even longer. I really do think it's an act of laziness on the writer's part. It's like they thought "Damn I have a brain fart at this moment in the episode let's just cut to some country music poster child. Maybe I'm being critical and yes, I know Family Guy is famous for showing random cultural content in episodes but this one just drives me crazy for some reason. Am I the only one who thinks this way? Am I over analyzing it too much? Please someone let me know!

15 powerful insights from Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five

Image

There aren’t many writers who witnessed a 20th century apocalypse at first hand. But of those who have Kurt Vonnegut’s response, Slaughterhouse-Five, is arguably the most memorable. It was published in 1969, twenty-four years after Vonnegut, a 23 year-old American prisoner of war, survived the Allied firebombing of Dresden. This massive air attack, which killed 130,000 people and destroyed a city of no military significance was probably the most important thing, besides getting married and having children, which ever happened to him.
